The Artist Hines
b. 1956 New York City
Growing up in New York, the artist Hines was obsessed with drawing. As a child his main interest was drawing the human figure. By the time he had graduated high school he began producing beautiful meticulous figurative and surrealistic graphite renderings on paper.
In 1994, while living in Atlanta Georgia, Hines began exploring oil painting. Studying the styles and techniques of the old masters Hines handed in his pencils for paint brushes, giving rise to his erotic surrealist paintings on canvases. Always inspired by his need for creative freedom, Hines eventually became bored with what he regarded as the rigidity of representational painting. Wishing to find a style of painting that focused less on the end product and more on the freedom and physical pleasures of the painting process itself , he found himself exploring a new direction, abstract painting. Hines moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2003 and for several years eclectically continued to paint surreal, figurative and abstract works until eventually focusing primarily on Abstraction painting.
Originally influenced by the New York school of abstract expressionists, particularly Franz Kline and then Barnett Newman, Hines eventually developed his style of Intuitive Abstract painting that along with giving him the creative freedom he hungered for, also gave him the means to present live spontaneous improvisational painting performances. As his popularity and reputation grew so did his interests in sharing his knowledge and giving back to the artist community through teaching. Hines is now a sought after painting instructor. Hines teaches "Intuitive Abstract Painting In Acrylics" throughout the year, gives private workshops and performs abstract painting demonstrations both locally and nationally.
The Artist Hines lives in Sausalito, California with his wife Dinene, their child Emmett and cat Misty. Hines shows regularly with The Artist Guild of San Francisco, at art festivals and in local galleries.
