“When I became interested in abstract painting I focused my studies on the New York school of Abstract Expressionists. It was through artists like Franz Kline and Robert Motherwell that I first began to understand the language of abstraction. In time my abstracts began to gravitate more towards the color field painters with their minimalist approach to color and composition. Though I very much admired the works of Barnett Newman, Clifford Still and Mark Rothko I wanted my paintings to have their color field minimalism yet go further in terms of texture, color and chiaroscuro.”
